Day 20 – Spokane, WA
We got off to a good start today, everyone up fairly early, breakfast (mine) nearly on time, and out for a good walk with Don almost on schedule. We walked over to the airstrip in back of the Park, and got to watch a helicopter land. I seized an opportunity to establish a friendly relationship with the proprietor of the Chevron station next to the Park, while he was dumping some garbage in his dumpster; turned out he had a Goldie of his own at home. Obviously a person of good taste.

We got our act together and loaded into the truck well before noon, and embarked on what looked like a shopping trip. First, Don had to stop at a RV parts place to pick up some fluorescent tubes for the kitchen sink light, then we headed south down Highway 2 to a shopping center. We pulled into a parking place in front of a building with a sign on it that looked familiar; my nose told me that it could possibly be a pet food store. I watched as Geri entered the building, while I languished in my private compartment in the truck. I wasn’t sure about the identity of the building, until I saw a lady going into it with her dog. It was a PetsMart! I immediately started banging at the window between me and the front compartment of the truck, to alert Don that I was being denied my usual access to the PetsMart floor for cleanup duty. Don got out of the cab and came around to the rear of the truck, opening the upper flap to let him access me and provide some solace for my feelings, which were badly hurt. He did what he could to comfort me, but I was really inconsolable; it has always been my job to inspect the floors of any PetsMart we visit to ensure that any spilled dog food was properly cleaned up and their spotless reputation was maintained. I really felt like I was letting the company down.

Geri came out of the store, and we drove up the street a little to a Target, where she had some other shopping to do. Don tried to give me some more comfort and solace, but I was still pretty upset. When Geri came back from the store, Don asked her where my lunch meat was, which she was supposed to get at PetsMart. She admitted that she had forgotten it, so we went back, and Geri took me into the store. I was very relieved to be able to complete my inspection, and found the place to be spotless, without any dog food spills. Well, I wish I had found a few. But the lady at the checkout counter was very friendly and liberal with her treats, so I didn’t go away hungry. I considered it a bad situation corrected.

Geri and Don had their own hunger by this time, and they tooled up the road to a restaurant located in an old railroad car. They were in there for a long time, and I got some good nap time in. When they returned, they said that the food was great, and that the old rail car was originally a Pullman sleeper, reconfigured to a dining car back in the 1920’s. Don had ordered his favorite breakfast, a “Chicken Fried Steak”, whatever that is, with eggs and hash brown potatoes. He said it was the second best he ever had, but he couldn’t exactly remember where he had the best.

                                                     Frank's Diner for breakfast

They decided that a museum visit was our next destination, and we went into downtown Spokane to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. I had no interest whatsoever in the institution’s offerings, so I stayed in the truck and napped. They were back in an hour or so, and informed me that the displays on the history of Spokane were very good, but the rest of the exhibits, which were principally on local modern artists and Indian costumes, left them looking for something else. We drove through a residential area near the museum that had some of the most magnificent homes in Spokane, some of them beautifully rehabilitated, others in miserable condition, some converted to boarding houses. We stopped for a little walk along a path on the edge of a deep valley with a creek at the bottom of it, and took a few pics.

We headed back to the rig, and Geri took me out for a nice walk, including a massive defurring with the Furminator. I realize that it results in losing part of my persona, but it really feels good while she’s doing it! Back in the coach, we worked on the blog, watched some TV, and hit the hay (I’m not sure where that came from, but it means going to bed). G’nite!
